Physical Education

PE picture

St Mary's school provide a comprehensive physical education programme. Throughout their post primary years, the students experience a broad range of physical activities.

The aim of the P.E. programme is to foster a healthy and positive attitude to sport, health and physical fitness, at the same time encouraging good interpersonal skills.

First and second years participate in gymnastics, dance, games, swimming, athletics and tennis. Games include basketball, badminton, some football, and table tennis.

From Third year on, the students are also offered modules in fitness, i.e. aerobics, step aerobics and circuit training.

Leaving Cert and Transition classes are taught the fundamentals in the theory of health and fitness through our comprehensive leisure and recreation programme. Here, students also spend time taking part in a variety of activities in the local community.

Competition in sport is encouraged, while it is difficult to field teams with the small numbers in our school. St Mary's have been involved in schools competitions in basketball, table tennis and swimming. In 2001, St Mary's senior basketball team won the final of the S.S.A. Tournament held in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
